Jet Airways, the second largest airline in India after IndiGo, will soon start a new WiFi-based in-flight entertainment (IFE) service that will allow passengers to watch content on their personal gadgets mid-air. The carrier also announced plans for offering in-flight wi-fi to its passengers, subject to regulatory approvals. Jet Airways’ new in-flight service allows wireless streaming of content directly onto WiFi-enabled smartphones, tablets, and laptops and offer streaming of movies, TV programmes, music, interactive games and children’s programmes. Jet Airways becomes the second carrier to offer in-flight entertainment service after Vistara.

Presently, Vistara offers its business class passengers customised tablets with selected pre-loaded entertainment content. The service will offer wireless streaming of movies, TV programmes, music, interactive games, and children’s programmes right onto the flyer’s devices. The streaming service, will be launched in phases and will be introduced on the Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft in the Jet Airways fleet starting from the second quarter of 2016.

Jet Airways has developed the new system in collaboration with Global Eagle Entertainment Incorporated, which specialises in media content, technology and connectivity solutions to the travel industry. Once the service is fully rolled out, passengers will be able to enjoy a high quality library of audio/video content, a state-of-the-art 3D flight tracker, interactive games, and have access to a wide range of destination information. Jet Airways further plans to upgrade from a streaming service to a full broadband satellite connectivity in the future, (subject to regulatory approvals), allowing guests to enjoy services such as internet surfing, e-mail, social media, connecting flight information, instant messaging, real time travel services and destination deals.
