India ranks 65th amongst 140 countries in tourism competitiveness, the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) 2013 of the World Economic Forum revealed. The country is positioned at 11th place in the Asia-Pacific region. Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma, in a written reply, said that the Government is now aiming to raise India’s ranking from 65th to 62nd. The same has been set as a target for the travel and tourism competitiveness index in the Results-Framework Document for Minister of Tourism for the year 2014-15.
Sharma further added that the government has taken steps for the development and promotion of tourism including creation of infrastructure. New schemes have also been announced for development of five tourist circuits around specific themes. An amount of Rs. 500 crore has been allocated for this purpose. The tourist visa on arrival enabled with electronic travel authorisation was launched on November 27 for nationals of 43 countries including US, Germany, Israel and Russia.
