According to Via.com, Asia’s largest travel network with presence in over 2600 towns and cities, the recent spurt in flash sales in the airlines segment has led to an increase in the hotel bookings and holiday packages by almost five times.
The surge in air travel bookings due to the price war started by the airlines has resulted in an overall increase of sales in the company by nearly 200 per cent in June itself.
According to Swaminathan Vedaranyam, Chief Executive Officer, VIA, the company has witnessed an increase in the number of bookings on numerous sectors. Commenting on the new development, he says, “We see leisure travellers making the most of these flash sales. There has been a big upsurge in the bookings for metros such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata which act as gateways to any leisure destination.
We have also seen a rise in bookings at leisure destinations such as Goa, Srinagar, Kerala, etc.”
Not just this, piggybacking on this flash sale is the holidays and hotel segment. The company has seen a rise in exclusive hotel and holiday packages once the airline bookings are done. “With more people preferring smaller weekend getaways and smaller vacations more frequently rather than taking one big annual break, the flash sales come in handy. Unlike airline bookings, hotel bookings business was earlier ruled by seasonality.
This is now changing. After booking the air tickets in advance, people are going for buying hotel packages and holiday packages separately at a later date. We are seeing a clear growth of about 100 per cent in the last 12-15 months in the holiday bookings segment,” he adds.
